Time has been kind to Sixto Rodriguez. ”Sugar Man,” a folk song directed from a drug addict to his dealer, should’ve been a huge hit when it first came out in early 1970, but it went nowhere … at the time. Over time, the Detroit resident’s stature unexpectedly grew overseas — he picked up waves of success in Australia (where this song later got used in a Heath Ledger movie) and especially in South Africa, where the album “Cold Fact” was a massive underground hit. When Light in the Attic re-released his debut album in 2008, this amazing song — with its scuzzy, ornate production — got a second chance in the U.S. You should give it a first chance.
